How Dr. Amy Got Here
It started with a gap she couldn't ignore.
After finishing her psychiatry training, Dr. Amy kept noticing that many of her patients had acne - sometimes triggered by the very medications she was prescribing. She cared deeply about their wellbeing. But their skin? She couldn't help with that. Not yet.
So she went looking for a second specialty. One that actually made sense alongside psychiatry.
Dermatology was the answer - and not just because it filled the gap. It turns out the skin and the brain develop from the same layer of cells in the embryo. They're deeply, biologically connected. Most doctors don't think about it that way. Dr. Amy couldn't stop thinking about it.
She also hadn't forgotten what it felt like to have bad acne as a teenager. That memory never fully left her.
She trained under Dr. Alan Shalita - one of the world's foremost acne experts, and a pioneer behind the original research on Accutane and Retin-A. From him, she absorbed both the science and something harder to teach: the habit of genuinely sitting with a patient, asking real questions, and understanding that what's happening in someone's life almost always shows up on their skin.
When Skin Clears, Lives Change
Dr. Amy has trained the Spotless clinicians to not just look at your skin, but to ask about sleep, stress, exercise, relationships. Because all of it matters.
Over 20+ years, she's collected drawers full of thank-you notes from acne patients. They went back to school. They interviewed for jobs. They went on dates. They auditioned. They got back out into the world and did things they'd put off because acne had made them feel too badly about themselves to try.
One patient found Dr. Amy after seeing her on the Tyra Banks show. He had severe cystic acne and it had derailed his life - school, work, self-esteem. As his skin cleared, he got his confidence back. Completely.
That's what Dr. Amy means when she says acne is always treatable. And that everyone should have hope.
